Small Town Scandal
Small Town Scandal & 808 Ltd.
From small towns to big secrets, Small Town Scandal, the hit podcast turned television series, was brought to life by Sky Originals and NZ On Air, starring award-winning comedian, writer, and director Tom Sainsbury.
808 Ltd. helped bring the comedic chaos of Small Town Scandal to the screen, delivering 56 visual effects shots across the series. Our work focused on supporting the storytelling rather than stealing the spotlight, using VFX to quietly elevate the world and enhance the humour where it counted.
“808 has done a fantastic job, and I feel honoured to have had you on board.”
- Thomas Sainsbury, Small Town Scandal Creator
CASE STUDY
Blood work in VFX sits in a sweet spot between technical problem-solving and storytelling. A blood spray isn’t just about throwing red particles into a shot. It’s about understanding force, direction, and timing. Was it a sudden impact or a lingering wound? Fast, atomised mist behaves very differently from thick, heavy droplets, and getting that right can be the difference between a moment that feels shocking and exciting versus one that feels staged.
Blood puddles present their own challenges. They need weight and patience. Puddles often spread slowly and unevenly, cling to surface details, and reflect light in subtle ways that change as the puddles grow. On set, you’re often working around clean plates or minimal practical elements, so the VFX team has to carry the realism without drawing attention to itself.
Blood effects in visual storytelling support the action, sell the impact, and keep the audience locked into the moment. It’s invisible work at its messiest - carefully crafted, physically grounded, and always in service of the story.
We were tasked with replacing the face of an AI-generated image with a photo of Mitch. Through careful compositing, precise grading, and attention to detail, we seamlessly integrated Mitch’s likeness, creating a final result that looks completely natural and polished.
808 Ltd. would like to thank Georgina Conder and Carthew Neal for the opportunity to collaborate on a fun local favourite.
